Charlie Greco is the fourth-generation to take leadership in a business that bears the Greco name. In 2015, Charlie brought in a new era of leadership that is guided by the following principles.
We refer to these as WINs or What’s Important Now.
Currently, I am spending time with my family doing various activities such as camping, biking, and water sports. I usually spend less than 30% of my time doing activities with my family. When we get to go out together, I enjoy myself and make great memories with my family. I love learning new things and sharing my experiences with my wife and kids. My wife and I have a vacation planned around scuba diving in a few months and I feel very fortunate that she has taken up an interest in something I love. My wife’s roots as a hair stylist gives her the outgoing and artistic background and experience which the construction industry finds refreshing I still like to involve my father in Greco Steel because I believe he is the 50 years of foundation of this company. I highly respect his input and opinion on life.
I would love to see my children interested and involved with Greco Steel in the future, but not as everyone else’s wish. If they are interested in joining the Greco team, I would have guidelines set-up to test their capabilities and how they can be an asset to Greco. I would not be the hiring official for my children, but rather a board of Greco’s employees would evaluate and determine if my children are value add characters. If my children decide they would like to be involved with the work aspect of Greco Steel, they would have to earn their keep. They would not be the people to simply be part of the lucky sperm club. They have to perform. I would love to see “working at Greco Steel” become an aspiration for my children. I would like to be able to use Greco Steel to take care of my parents and children. I would love for this company to help my family for the future but ultimately, I want Greco to provide helpful knowledge to my family. I want to be the father that spends quality time with his children every day.
I work hard to be a good Christian and going to church weekly is something that I believe engages me with other good people and helps me see a bigger purpose in my daily life. I think that my Christian involvement helps me shape the ideals and principles of Greco Steel. I am able to reflect on my beliefs when I direct my employees at Greco and I am able to institute my values into the company.
I would like to be able to attend church each week with my family and stay actively involved in the church community. I feel that this participation connects my beliefs and morals directly to the company. I feel strongly about treating others with a high level of respect and I hope that Greco continues to give and receive a great reputation from our clients and the communities we are involved with. This reflects on me as a leader in the company and gives me satisfaction to know Greco treats people the way I do in my day-to-day life.
I enjoy going biking around the city and in the mountains. I feel that this activity helps clear my mind and relaxes me. I enjoy doing other activities that involve a lot of movement. I feel that the intensity of the things I do reflect on my determination and help make me think like the leader I am. I enjoy going to the gym and working out, but I have not been able to work out as much as I would like. I feel that the activities that I like to be involved in shape who I am as an individual and I want to stay true to myself. My 7 days a week effort has begun to pay dividends. The desire to achieve balance has a plan. I focus on the people who will make it happen.
I would like to have more down time to be involved in more of the activities I love. I do not want to feel that I am losing myself to my work load. I would like to cut down my hours spent in the office and be able to focus on the things I love, the things that make me the person I am. I want to be myself and not be consumed by the work going on at Greco at all times. I would like to have time to workout at least six days a week by myself on the P90X program. I feel that working out is crucial to keeping my mind and body active and will help energize me for the day.
I am currently spending a majority of my time each week working at Greco. I left the nursing business to help my family, cut my pay and enjoyment some 20 years ago. I love creating culture that provides people with a growth path.
I am blown away with how well Greco has operated. I am now more comfortable with the idea of controlling a company and hope to continue expanding Greco’s reputation and work load in the future. With that expansion, I would like to see more people with the ability to run Greco without my undivided attention. I would love to see reports about Greco’s standings and what all our team is accomplishing, so that I may, ten years from now (2018), manage from a distance. I would like my Greco team to be highly motivated people that can get work done without me looking over their shoulder constantly. I would love to trust that my team will have the same level of intensity and appreciation for their work as I do. This distribution of work will allow me to take a step back. I believe that this will help me run Greco in a more efficient manner because things will have to be better documented and reported throughout the company. Ideally, someday I would like to have one to two months off season of vacation time.
Within the next five years, I would like to institute a “helping hand” work program for people with a background of substance abuse. This program would provide rehabilitation services along with training and placement services so that we may give direction to these individuals’ lives. This program will allow these individuals to be introduced back into the working society so that they may learn how to do their purpose in life as a productive citizen and earn their own living. I would love to invest in housing facilities for the individuals enrolled in our program so that getting to work is not diverting these individuals from the focus of earning a sense of purpose from the hands-on work they are completing.
